Heritage and Adaptive Reuse

Adaptive reuse and renovation of the ground floor of a prominent colonial-era corner building overlooking Post Office Square in the historic centre of Phnom Penh.

The project transformed a vacant and deteriorated space into a contemporary restaurant, cocktail bar and wine shop while retaining the character and atmosphere of the original building. Following initial concerns regarding the condition of the structure, a detailed structural survey was undertaken which identified the need for significant strengthening works. The renovation incorporated concealed steel reinforcement to support and stabilise the upper floor while preserving the historic architectural fabric. The project was designed in collaboration with Claire Campens, Achitect.

The design carefully integrates contemporary hospitality functions within the existing building, creating a series of intimate dining, bar and wine tasting spaces while respecting the scale, proportions and character of the original structure. New interventions were deliberately contemporary yet understated, allowing the historic building to remain the primary focus.

Today, Le Manolis is highlighted on Phnom Penh's architectural heritage walking tour as an example of sensitive restoration and adaptive reuse.
