Adaptive Reuse & Interior Renovation

Flow Restaurant involved the renovation and adaptive reuse of a colonial-era building that had been altered and extended over many decades, resulting in fragmented spaces, inconsistent ceiling heights and little connection to its surroundings.

Following structural repairs, the design sought to introduce light, openness and spatial release. A large picture window was added to the existing double height space offering a view of a mature tree, while roof glazing draws natural light deep into the plan.

Rather than concealing the varied ceiling levels, the design embraces them. Inspired by the geometric compositions of Piet Mondrian, a continuous black steel framework weaves throughout the restaurant, wrapping walls and ceilings, unifying old and new spaces. Composed of solid panels, mirrors, back-lit frosted glass and open voids, the ceiling becomes both an architectural device and a playful linking element—what Paul Klee described as “a line going for a walk”.

The result was a contemporary dining environment that celebrates the building's layered history while creating a distinctive and memorable dining experience.
