Heritage & Adaptive Reuse

Lotus Art Gallery involved the adaptive reuse of a historic Cambodian shophouse in the centre of Battambang. Over time, the building had fallen into a severe state of disrepair, suffering from damp, termite infestation and significant structural deterioration.

The design sought not only to restore the building but also to create a flexible cultural venue capable of accommodating gallery exhibitions, performances, film screenings and community events. The building was stripped back to its original brick structure for two reasons: to expose and repair extensive damp-damaged masonry, and to reveal the character and proportions of the historic fabric, allowing new interventions to be carefully integrated
